The GPlates Web Service and the GPlates plate-model repository are used only when rebuilding `data/recon.json`. ## Changes made to the plate model The plate model is not redistributed in its original form. For this page: - finite rotations were requested from the GPlates Web Service for every 10 million years from 0 to 250 Ma, stored as quaternions rounded to six decimals, and are interpolated in the browser; - rotations are masked where the rotation tree says a plate did not exist at that time; - the present-day static polygons were rasterised to a 0.5° grid of plate IDs, and each plate is labelled with the polygon name that covers most of it, except two plain-language labels (North China for plate 601, Somalia for plate 709); - Natural Earth coastlines are carried with those rotations, and the land between them is filled on the same 0.5° grid. The results are a simplified reconstruction for general interest, not the authors' published maps. Neither the authors nor EarthByte endorse this page. ## Müller et al. 2022 Müller, R.
